Casting And Jigging For Spanish Mackerel
This can be another great way of working an area for Spanish Mackerel, You know they’re there, but they don’t want to play. Spanish Mackerel are fast, seriously fast and will smash any high speed jig, they just can’t help themselves.

Check out your local tackle shop, They’ll have a huge range of high speed silver jigs, lures, etc and sizes great for this purpose. These can be cast or deep water jigged. Remember to crank as fast as you can, then drop and do it all over again, This is the way for Spanish Mackerel, and also any of the other smaller mackerel species if they’re in the area.
Once again look for structure, there’s no point just working lures in the middle of nowhere, Spanish Mackerel will hang out around certain known spots, Get to know your local tackle shop, buy a few lures, and I’m sure they’ll give you some great tips to get going.
Look for bommies around reef edge’s and heaps of Fusiliers, the more skittish the better, you can bet your last dollar something’s harassing them below. One of the best sights I’ve seen, casting to the above, high speed retrieving across the surface getting smashed by a 25kg Spanish Mackerel, half out of water 6 foot from the boat, and them steaming off to the horizon busting me up in quick succession, awesome sight, and something I’ll never forget.
Keeps me casting those slugs and lures even when times are slow. GT’s, Giant Trevally will also be hanging about these areas as well and might also be responsible for stirring up the Fusiliers.
These chrome lures come in various sizes and when aiming for serious Spanish Mackerel, obviously serious size slugs are worth giving a go. I also a believer in a bit of red on a lure, looks good and works well.
Also go with a good quality spinning reel, with the Penn Spinfishers a good starting base, then up to your Shimano Stella’s for big fish work, for the serious enthusiast and also keen if working lures and poppers for GT’s as well. Generally overheads reels, unless with serious High speed retrieves, just can’t keep up the pace.
If big long lures, generally can get away without wire, as they’ll bite the tail off a bait and get a mouth full of hooks, looks more natural and get more strikes. But if fish are thick and losing a few, just a small 15cm wire trace can save a lot of those hard earned dollars.
Well worth a try jigging, high speed retrieves with chromes lures can make a difference on a quiet day, and awesome fun when you do get smashed.
